Rachael DicksonName: Rachael Dickson

Age: S6

Occupation: High School Pupil

Favourite sport / activity: Basketball/Table Tennis

How long have you been a volunteer with Active Schools? 4 years volunteering with Active Schools

How did you get involved with Active Schools?  I got involved in volunteering through Miss Dundas, a PE teacher at our school.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering? I enjoy the smile I bring to children’s faces when I volunteer because it makes me realise what I do is benefiting them.

How has being a volunteer with Active Schools benefited you? It has given me the experience I need to progress in later life where I hope to become a primary teacher.

Describe your most memorable moment from your time as a volunteer with Active Schools? My most memorable moment is when I became Young Volunteer of the Year for 2016-17. It made me feel proud as I know what I am doing is able to have a positive impact on others.

What would you like to be doing in 5 years time? I hope to have graduated from university and achieved my degree in primary teaching. I hope that I will then go on to have a full-time job in a classroom.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer? To enjoy and have fun when volunteering because there is no better feeling than watching those around you having fun and making memories.

If you could try one sport that you’ve never done before what would it be? I would try boccia because I am so inspired by what is being achieved by those playing the sport that they make me feel like I can achieve anything.

If you were left on a desert island and could take with you a luxury item, a book, and a piece of music.  What would they be and why? I would bring my phone so I could keep in touch with my family because I would miss them. I would bring my book called The Hobbit because it reminds me of my Dad, we would always watch the movie together. The piece of music I would bring would be Florida Georgia Line  ‘May We All’ because it’s what my friends and I listen to when we are together.
