Scottish National League   Title Decider     Senior Men

A fantastic match in the capital saw FURY crowned Kings of Scottish Mens Basketball with a superb 13 point win on 1.3.13. !! Both teams produced an exciting, sporting contest in front of a full house at Portobello HS – in fact many had to be turned away as simply no more fans to get in! The holders Edinburgh got out to a deserved 11 point half-time lead but a fantastic Fury fightback saw the gap reduced to 1 going into the final period after holding the home side to 7 points in the third stanza. Then the Clark Eriksson sponsored side swept to victory on the back of great team defence, 4 threes from Jonny Bunyan and great baskets from Scott Russell and Stu Mackay. Fury finished off the Kings as the Falkirk side hit 10 consecutive free throws with Euro stars Frenchman Walter Lubeigt hitting 4 in a row and Greek forward Greg Foussas adding two. Jonny Bunyan and Scott Russell also had two apiece from the line and Foussas.

Fury celebrated in style with their great travelling support in what was a comeback to remember, giving Fury their first mens title in 12 seasons after too many runners-up slots to remember.

Captain Keith Bunyan who hit three key threes in the match was presented with the trophy by Edinburgh MSP Kezia Dugdale.
Brother Jonny Bunyan was Fury’s top scorer with 24 points and Scott Russell who has been key in a Fury 4 game winning run racked up 16.

Fury Headcoach John Bunyan was full of praise for both teams for putting on a game that was a credit to Scottish Basketball and for the displays of not only his two sons who combined for 33 and 7 threes ; the Euro’s Foussas and Lubeigt, guard Scott Russell, but the twin towers Stu Mackay who had key baskets in the final periods and the brave display by centre Roni Gordon coming back to play a big part in Fury’s defensive strategy on the Kings bigs – his first game since his serious injury against the Kings 4 months ago. Bryan Munnoch and Richard Thorpe also played key roles coming of the bench and Coach Bunyan above all praised the fantastic support had team had on the night and throughout the season, including a great touch from EJ Harrison, Gareth Murray, Andy Wedemire and Dale Grieve who travelled from Glasgow to support their fellow pro Rock – Jonny in this crucial game.

Fury’s 17-1 winning season has greatly helped the tremendous interest in basketball in Falkirk, evidenced by Fury’s increasing nos in their development squads and on the game court at half-time and full time on Friday nights!!
A full match report with be posted soon along with same great photos from the night.
