The Falkirk Steeple's 200th Birthday

In 2014 our iconic Falkirk Steeple celebrated its 200th birthday and a whole host of festivities were planned to mark the occasion.

About the Falkirk Steeple

For over 400 years Falkirk has had a town steeple dominating the skyline and the current Steeple was completed in 1814 to a design by David Hamilton of Glasgow. Standing at 140ft tall it was used as the town’s prison and the ground floor was a shop. The current Steeple is the third to be built with the earliest being built sometime in the late 16th or early 17th century however its exact location is unknown. In 1927 the top 40 feet of the Steeple was damaged during a lightning storm. Outwardly the Steeple has changed little since it was repaired following this.

An education pack has been developed on the history of the Steeple for use by schools and other groups. A copy of this can be downloaded via the Get Involved section of the Falkirk THI website.

Both the interior and exterior of Falkirk Steeple will be restored as part of the Falkirk Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI). This work will help ensure that the Steeple standing in the centre of Falkirk town will remain a prominent icon for Falkirk’s Bairns for many years to come. Updates on this can be found on the THI website.

Councillor Adrian Mahoney, spokesperson for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said: “The Steeple is a great icon for the area and has a fascinating history. The on-going work of the Townscape Heritage Initiative is rejuvenating Falkirk’s town centre and will ensure that the Steeple along with other historic buildings will be preserved for future generations.” The project is part of a £5.5m plan to improving the physical appearance of Falkirk’s town centre and is funded by Falkirk Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and Falkirk BID.
