A caterpillar was asked
What he wanted to be when he grew up.
'A butterfly,' he answered
How they laughed and laughed.

‘You’re not going to be some special thing
With beautiful wings!
You’re going to help with the gardening,’
His father told him sternly.

The caterpillar took off his shoes (all fifty pairs)
And tried not to cry,
As he counted cabbages
To get some sleep.

But that autumn
He knitted himself a jumper
And closed his eyes-
He had to believe it was true.

And one spring morning
He woke up feeling new.
He flew through the window-
A butterfly at last.
