The parish of Muiravonside has seen many changes. It was mostly rural, with farming focusing on dairy, poultry and barley or oats. There were pockets of early industrialisation in the 19th century with numerous coal mines, coke ovens and their associated mineral lines. A rare steel mill produced spades. A blast furnace produced pig iron that was used in other local foundries; bricks for which were produced at Manual - parish of great diversity.
