Mountain Training Scotland

Mountain Training

Mountain Training offers programmes of training and assessment for walkers interested in leading groups as well as skills awards that teach individuals how to look after themselves in the hills and mountains.  The UK and Ireland are home to a great many stunning locations and our work is dedicated to helping more people get out there and enjoy them.  For dates and more information about any of the Mounting Training Courses run by Falkirk Community Trust please call us on 01324 506846.  Candidates must register direct with Mountain Training prior to training.

Hill & Moorland Leader Award £220 (3 days)

The Hill and Moorland Leader award is designed for people who want to lead groups in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. This award is a wonderful opportunity to learn the leadership skills required to feel confident about taking people out walking. This award focuses on non-mountainous terrain. Previously this award was called the Walking Group Leader, and we think the new name better describes the award. The ‘overnight experience’ element of the WGL has been removed and we’ve created a separate Expedition Skills Module which can be ‘bolted on’ to the Hill and Moorland Leader (or indeed the Lowland Leader) if you want to increase the scope of your award to include multi-day expeditions.  Candidates must register direct with Mountain Training prior to training.  3/4/5 April, 25/26/27 May, 4/5/6 September and 6/7/8 November.  Day 1 8.30am - 6.30pm; Day 2 9am - 9.30pm including night navigation (exact timings dependent on time of year); Day 3 8.30am - 6.30pm.  Hill & Moorland Assessment costs £255 and runs over 3 days - 25/26/27 April, 15/16/17 June, 11/12/13 September and 13/14/15 November.  Day 1 9am - 6pm; Day 2 9am - 9.30pm (exact timings dependent on time of year); Day 3 9am - 6pm.

Mountain Leader Award (Summer) £360 (6 days)

The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland.  If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you'll never look back.  Mountain Leaders operate the length and breadth of the country with all sorts of groups of people; from scouts and schoolchildren to outdoor instructors and OAPs.  The qualification is what you make it and there are countless opportunities for passionate Mountain Leaders.  Please check on the Mountain Training website that you have all the prerequisites.  At Falkirk we run our training courses in two different formats.  The traditional six days back to back or a split weekends.  Both courses have six days contact time.  Candidates must register direct with Mountain Training prior to training.  6 day course; 21 - 26 April, 31 Aug - 5 September, 26 - 31 October.  Split courses: 8/9/10 & 15/16/17 May and 25/26/27 September & 2/3/4 October.  Mountain Leader Assessment £385 (5 days) Full week: 8 - 12 June + 5 - 9 October.  Split course 23/24 & 29/30/31 May and 12/13 & 18/19/20 September.

Lowland Leader £140 (2 days)

Our newest leadership award, the Lowland Leader Award, has been created for people wishing to lead groups on footpaths, trails and lowland countryside anywhere in the UK and Ireland.  It is perfect for people in a position of responsibility, whose leadership role is restricted to walking in these areas, such as Duke of Edinburgh Award leaders, teachers and youth workers.  Both days run 8.30am - 6pm on 28 & 29 March, 9 & 10 May, 29 & 30 August and 7 & 8 November.  Lowland Leader Assessment takes places over 2 days (£155) 9am - 6pm both days on 24 & 25 April, 6 & 7 June, 19 & 20 September and 14 & 15 November.

Hill Skills & Mountain Skills

Both part of the Hill and Mountain skills scheme, the Hill Skills course is a practical introduction for beginners to the techniques required for hill walking.  Mountain Skills course is for walkers who are interested in applying their countryside skills to the mountain environment.

Expedition Skills module (£140 (2 days and 1 night)
