Archaeology Volunteer

What is an archaeological volunteer?

There is a range of tasks that can be undertaken on an archaeological excavation, fieldwalk or survey. These vary from the well-known digging with trowels, spades and so on, to explaining the site to the public or washing finds, holding a tape measure and watching for finds in the barrows. They allow us to explore and record the unwritten traces of our past.

What’s in it for you?

  • Meet new and interesting people
  • Explore parts of Falkirk’s historical environment often inaccessible
  • Learn more about the area and its past
  • Learn new techniques and the logic of a dig
  • Increase your self-confidence
  • Improve your communication skills
  • Have fun
  • Discover artefacts that were last seen hundreds of years ago

What’s involved?

  • Tasks can be tailored to the individual’s abilities or commitment.
  • Much of the work is outdoors and at different times of the year.

Skills, Attitude, and Experience Required

  • An interest in history of archaeology is preferable. Skills will be taught on site.
