WELCOME to GLADIATORS: A CEMETERY OF SECRETS
An Exhibition from the Creators of Jorvik Viking Centre
In 2004-5, eighty burials, dating from the early 2nd century to the late 3rd century AD, were unearthed in York. This site was part of a large cemetery on the outskirts of the Roman town of Eboracum, across the river from the legionary fortress.

What you’ll see:
The exhibition features the skeletal remains of six of the men, all of whom were decapitated and suffered injuries prior to death, buried in this cemetery alongside other Roman-age material from excavations across Northern Britain. Recent research has added to the story and uncovered more about who these men were, where they came from, how they died and why. Accompanying the exhibition is an engaging hands-on play-area based on a Roman market where families can have fun exploring what life was like a Roman town.

Visitors to the exhibition also have the opportunity to explore all of Callendar House, set in the nationally-important historic designed landscape of Callendar Park, which also contains a section of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site. The House's permanent displays are The Story of Callendar House, a history covering the 11th to the 19th centuries, The Antonine Wall, Rome's Northern Frontier, and Falkirk: Crucible of Revolution 1750-1850, tells how the local area was transformed during the first century of the industrial era. Check out the restored 1825 Kitchen which featured in Series 2 of OUTLANDER. The Park Gallery offers a changing programme of contemporary visual art exhibitions.

Callendar House Tearoom opens 10am – 4pm serving home-cooked breakfasts, lunches and delicious freshly baked cakes. You can pre-book Afternoon Tea in our Drawing Room on 01324 506850. Gifts, toys, books, arts and crafts available in the Gift Shop.
