The Show Goes On With Neil Brand

Welcome to a showstopping season of four musicals presented by Neil Brand. Lavishly produced and critically acclaimed, don’t miss Fiddler On The Roof (1971) at The Hippodrome. The season is supported by funds from the BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund.

A Message From Neil Brand About This Film

What I love about Norman Jewison’s musical adaptations, Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar, is that they re-imagine stage shows in a palpably real world.

In Fiddler (1971) Tevye’s home town of Anatevka is a real, albeit rotting, small shtetl in early 20th century Eastern Europe, the characters are ‘real’, rather than ‘stage’, types (the reason Jewison cast Topol rather than Zero Mostel who had created the role) and so the delight, jeopardy and the violence, when it comes, are no less real.

Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick created a world in which the traditions of Judaism became universal, that led us through the social conventions and used songs to make us understand and empathise with the characters – Sunrise Sunset, Wonder of Wonders, If I Were A Rich Man – a magnificent soundtrack which won John Williams his first Oscar for Score Adaptation. This is a major musical in the safe hands of a master filmmaker whose screen compositions, from the wedding dances to the serried ranks of Cossacks, must be seen on the big screen!

‘An absolutely powerful movie [...] it seems to me the most powerful movie musical ever made’ PAULINE KAEL, THE NEW YORKER

‘Greatly moving, an extraordinarily powerful, emotional experience’ GARY ARNOLD, THE WASHINGTON POST
